5 Mistakes That Cause Poor Tattoo Healing

How not to ruin the artist's work and ensure perfect healing.

5 Mistakes That Cause Poor Tattoo Healing

Mistake 1: Over-applying Ointment

Many beginners believe that "the more cream, the better" the moisturization. This is the most common mistake. A layer that's too thick of ointment or cream creates a dense, impenetrable film on the skin. Under this film, the skin can't breathe, creating a "greenhouse effect," which is an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply and, consequently, for inflammation.

Consequence: Inflammation, acne (pimples), slowed regeneration, and potential pigment washout.

The right way: Apply a very thin, barely visible layer. The tattoo should shine, but not be greasy.

Mistake 2: Soaking the Tattoo

Any prolonged exposure to water is strictly forbidden in the first two weeks. This includes taking baths, visiting swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms, and swimming in open water bodies. Water softens the scabs (or flaking skin), which can cause them to fall off prematurely along with the ink. Moreover, water from public places contains bacteria.

Consequence: Infection, loss of color saturation, uneven healing.

The right way: Take only a quick shower, avoiding direct contact with a strong stream of water and not lingering in the bathroom until the skin is "steamed up."

Mistake 3: Sunlight and UV Radiation

A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Sunlight and tanning beds are the main enemies of pigment and skin health. UV light not only causes inflammation and severe irritation but also triggers the breakdown of ink particles, leading to the tattoo fading even before it's healed.

Consequence: Severe inflammation, fading, premature aging of the tattoo.

The right way: Completely cover the tattoo from the sun (with loose clothing) for 2–4 weeks. After healing, always use sunscreen with a high SPF.

Mistake 4: Scratching and Picking Scabs

When the tattoo begins to actively flake (after about 5–10 days), intense itching occurs. Scratching and tearing off scabs or flaking skin particles is a direct path to scars and gaps in the design. You might accidentally pull out pigment that hasn't set yet.

Consequence: Scar formation, "holes" in the color, need for touch-ups.

The right way: If the itching is severe, gently pat the tattoo with your palm or re-apply a thin layer of ointment. The itching will soon pass.

Mistake 5: Not Following a Cleanliness Routine

Ignoring regular and proper washing is a direct route to infection. The tattoo excretes plasma and ink residue, which, when mixed with dirt and sweat, become a breeding ground for bacteria. Insufficient washing or, conversely, too aggressive scrubbing with a washcloth are equally harmful.

Consequence: Infection, severe inflammation, pus discharge.

The right way: Wash the tattoo 2–3 times a day with antibacterial or unscented baby soap and pat it dry with a clean paper towel.

Remember: 90% of healing success depends not on the artist, but on your aftercare. Strictly follow all recommendations to keep your tattoo vibrant and beautiful.
